Before you book

Planning your walk

When is the best time to walk?

The trails run all year. The dry season, from April to October, has the most reliable weather. June to August and December are the busiest months, so book early for those.

How fit do I need to be?

It depends on the trail. Some are short village walks; others involve several hours of hiking, steep climbs and uneven forest paths. Check the distance, elevation and difficulty on each trail page. If you are unsure, tell us about your walking experience and we will help you choose.

How far do we walk each day?

Distances vary by route and day. The full Astungkara Trail averages around 12 km a day, with a longer forest stage. Most walking takes place in the morning, though longer stages can extend into the afternoon. Check your trail page for daily distances and elevation.

What is the terrain like?

Farm paths, rice field bunds, village lanes and forest tracks. Expect mud after rain, some steep sections in the forest and stream crossings.

How big are the groups?

Between 4 and 9 pilgrims, with our own Balinese guides. A trail needs at least 4 people to run. If your date has fewer, we suggest another date.

Can I join on my own?

Yes, and many of our pilgrims do. Small groups, shared meals and evening circles make it easy to get to know one another.

Can children come?

Yes. Most trails welcome children from 6. Jungle Bathing and the full Astungkara Trail are from 12. Cascade Quest and the Ricefield Sleepover are favourites with families.

On the trail

Sleeping, eating and washing

Where do we sleep?

In guesthouses or on open platforms in forests, fields and village homes. Everyone has a mattress, blanket, pillow and mosquito net. On most trails sleeping is communal and there are no private rooms.

What do we eat and drink?

Three meals a day plus snacks, with water, tea and coffee at every stop. The food is mostly vegetarian, with eggs in some places, and vegan on request. We serve no meat and no dairy. Pilgrims often help with the cooking.

I have allergies. Can you adapt?

Tell us about allergies and dietary requirements before booking so we can discuss suitable meals with our hosts. Please also include them in your pre-trail form.

What are the bathrooms like?

Every stop has seated toilets and showers. Some places have cold water only.

Do I carry my own bag?

You carry a day pack. Your main luggage is driven from one stop to the next each day.

Practical

Packing, transport and safety

What should I bring?

Walking shoes you have already worn in, a raincoat and a refillable water bottle. We send a full packing list after you book.

How do I get to the start, and back?

Check your trail page for the meeting point and included transport. Selected trails include drop-off in Ubud or Canggu; others have a different return route. Ask us if you need help arranging a pick-up.

What happens in an emergency?

Our guides are trained in first aid and carry a medical kit. Before departure, please tell us about any health conditions or access needs so we can discuss the route and arrangements with you.

What happens after I book?

We confirm by WhatsApp, add you to a private group with logistics and forms closer to your dates, and host a short video call a few days before you walk.

Can we book a private trail?

Yes. Families, friends, schools and companies can book any trail privately. Write to Lucie with your dates and group size.
